HISTORY
When this project started in early 2006, Victoria was attending Kindergarten at a Bilingual Montessori school in France, and she was also a part-time pupil of the British Section of the Lycée International de St Germain en Laye, just West of Paris. As she was in the process of learning how to read and write, we devised these little
games for her to practice both skills in English and French, and improve to a level
similar to that of her brothers.
Our inspiration derives from the work of M. Charles Ogden, who had put together a list of words that one should master in order to speak Basic English, based on which we attempted to create our own selection of several hundred words that a pupil of 5 to 6 years old would know of, covering a wide range of phonemes.
And then, the idea developed into translating these games into other languages. Given the
rapidly-growing importance of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) states, we placed their
flags in the top-left corner of the screens.... And rather than calling this site Victoria's Babel Tower,
we thought "Victoria's Games" would be a more catchy phrase.
The games, which include sounds and pictures, were devised to be run exclusively on the internet.
The flags present on these pages are not an indication of any form of preference. We want to include Latin, ancient Greek, Swahili, etc... as soon as we find an appropriate "flag" for these languages !
Our goal is to cater to children across countries, to enable them to appreciate the diversity
of languages, but also of their common history, through the similarities in the languages' roots.
